OrthoWorx Interns Create ‘DiscoverMe’ for Eighth-Graders

Caleb Niemi, a third-year marketing major at Grace College, recently completed an internship at OrthoWorx, the local non-profit dedicated to capitalizing on the orthopedic resources and expertise in the Warsaw area.  While at OrthoWorx, Niemi and fellow interns created DiscoverMe, a program to educate eighth-graders about opportunities in the manufacturing industry.  DiscoverMe includes both a curriculum for in-school education and tours of manufacturing facilities during National Manufacturing Week.

“We created DiscoverMe to inspire young students to pursue careers in the local manufacturing industry,” Niemi said.  We hope that the program will cause many area students to follow their dreams to a successful career and help build upon the reputation Warsaw has for being a world leader in orthopedics and manufacturing.”

As a marketing major, Niemi was a key contributor in the creation of materials to generate awareness for the project including a press release, social media content, brochures, and in-school communication. He also visited local manufacturers to tour their facilities and film promotional material.

“Caleb’s down-to-earth approach allowed him to connect well with his teammates,” said Gennie Brissette-Tipton, OrthoWorx manager of communications and projects and supervisor of the intern team. “He made the work environment comfortable for everyone.”

At the end of the internship, Niemi and his team presented their project to local manufacturers and sponsors of the initiative. “I was very impressed with the poise with which Caleb and the entire team presented,” said Brad Bishop, executive director of OrthoWorx. “We had representatives from the orthopedic industry, local school systems, and public officials in the audience – a really broad spectrum of stakeholders – and we received nothing but kudos for their work and presentation.”

DiscoverMe will launch the week of Oct. 1, coinciding with National Manufacturing Week.

Now Niemi turns his focus back to academics as he pursues not only a bachelor’s degree in marketing, but also an MBA. Grace’s blended degree program allows students like Niemi to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just four years.  After his internship at OrthoWorx, he’s more excited than ever to start his career in business upon graduation in 2020.

Grace’s blended degree program is growing rapidly; the number of students enrolled has doubled over the past three years.  Students appreciate the efficiency of the program and the significant cost savings – blended degree students earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees for the cost of a bachelor’s degree.
